The government has said that there is currently no Women's Bank in Tanzania after the former Women's Bank merged with TPB Plc Bank.
This was stated in Parliament in Dodoma by the Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Dr.Ashatu Judge (Mb) was responding to the Special Constituency MP's question, Hon. Benefits Mohammed Bakar, who wanted to know the reasons that hindered the establishment of the Women's Bank in Zanzibar.
Dr. The judge said that the services of the former Women's Bank of Tanzania continue to be provided by TPB Plc Bank where it has established a special window for women in all its branches including Zanzibar and Pemba branches to meet their needs across the country.
"Call on Tanzanian women to use the existing Smile Account at TPB Plc Bank to benefit from low interest loans without having to be in groups like other Banks do", explained Dr.Judge.
Dr. The judge stated that the Smile Account was opened by the Post Office for Women only as the Women's Bank did and also gives credit to the individual woman in order to enable her to carry out her entrepreneurial, economic and social activities in the interest of the Nation generally.
On his part MP of the Special Chairs Hon. Prof Mohammed Bakar, commended the Government for its response by linking the Post Bank and the Women's Bank so that women could be served in all areas, where previously such services were available in limited areas due to the shortage of the Bank's branches
